Quick Guide

Clear answers. without the noise.

There are two different things happening.

They use related technology. They are not the same system.

The two tracks

Commercial Web3
Public networks and apps where people use digital wallets, tokens and smart contracts. Prices can move. You are responsible for your own keys. This is the world of Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins and many new apps.

Sovereign digital money
Official projects by central banks, such as the Digital Pound and the Digital Euro. These would be digital forms of existing national money. They are designed to stay stable, run under public law, and sit alongside cash and bank accounts. They are still being designed. They are not launched everyday currencies yet.

If you came here about the Digital Pound or Digital Euro

  • They are not cryptocurrencies.

  • One digital pound or euro is meant to equal one pound or euro.

  • Privacy, holding limits and offline payments are part of the official design discussions.

  • Cash is intended to remain available.

  • No decision to launch has finished the legal process.

If you came here about Web3, crypto or digital wallets

  • A wallet does not hold coins like a purse. It holds the keys that let you use assets recorded on a ledger.

  • If you lose the recovery phrase of a self-custody wallet, nobody can reset it for you.

  • Most losses come from being tricked, not from “the blockchain being hacked.”

  • You can learn the mechanics on a free test network with no real money.

Shared basics

What is a digital ledger?
A shared record of balances and transfers. Public versions are copied across many computers. Central banks can also use controlled private versions of the same idea.

What is a digital wallet?
The tool you use to view a balance and approve a payment or transaction. In Web3 this is often an app you control. A Digital Pound or Digital Euro wallet would likely come from a bank or approved provider.

Is this replacing cash tomorrow?
No. Cash use has fallen, but cash is still used and official plans say it should remain an option.

Do I need to buy crypto to understand this?
No. The Commercial Web3 course uses a test network. The Pound and Euro courses are explanations, not live wallets.

Common mix-ups

“Is the Digital Pound just Britcoin?”
No. It would be sterling issued by the state, not a speculative token.

“Is Web3 only for investing?”
No. People treat parts of it as a market. The underlying tools are about records, payments and applications. Speculation is optional. Safety is not.

“If it is digital, can the government see everything I buy?”
That is the main public worry about CBDCs. Official UK and euro-area designs say identity would sit with private providers and the central ledger would not hold your shopping profile. Those are design promises, still subject to law. Cash remains the most private everyday option.
